Turtle Nesting, Turtle Hatching, and Diving!
We are doing something a little different this year for our Turtle Rescue Program* because turtles in Cozumel are AMAZING! This is a great time for families, teachers, individuals and couples to learn more ab out turtles and help with the turtles’ survival. Our marine biologist, Ricardo, will guide us for 2 nights! First, he will help us find a mother turtle nesting on shore. (Care will be taken to not disturb her as she lays her eggs.) The next night, Ricardo will find another turtle nest ready to hatch, and we will help the baby turtles make it safely to the water! The next afternoon, we will go snorkeling in the ocean to a natural turtle feeding area. We will snorkel from a boat with a divemaster as our guide (Life Jackets available)! AND Diving is part of the itinerary every day, for those certified. (NOTE: The Fall Cozumel Getaway is still planned celebrating Halloween and Day of the Dead, Dia de los Muertos. A beautiful Mexican celebration. Trip dates Oct 27 – Nov 3, 2024. No turtle rescue tour on the fall trip as the turtles have completed the hatching season).
*TURTLE RESCUE PROGRAM: Cozumel has an amazing program with biologists and trained volunteers studying and protecting the turtles. In the summer, the turtles return to Cozumel, birthplace, and lay their eggs. After an incubation period, the eggs begin to hatch. Many predators are around to reduce the number of turtles. With the biologists, we are allowed to assist the baby turtles to increase their survival odds. It is an incredible feeling to experience and participate in the hatching. Seeing the progression of the turtle nesting, hatching, and finally the adults in the ocean is meaningful! The cost is approx. $85 pp per tour.
